My love affair with art began when I was a toddler. I remember watching my mother draw and the excitement I felt as she turned a couple circles and lines into a person’s face. Unfortunately, I couldn’t even make circles and lines. My attention turned to other things. In college, I rediscovered the excitement of seeing an image come to life the first time I printed a photograph in the darkroom. Photography became an intermittent hobby and then a full time pursuit. At first I worked in black and white. When digital technology made it possible to duplicate the effects of darkroom printing I explored the effects of color and size on the images I made. The range of possibilities expanded so much that photography became my starting off point in a multi-step process of printmaking that allows me to combine the visual elements of painting, sculpture and graphic design.

My creative process can best be described as improvisational. I start with a visual idea and play with it. The final image might be a refined version of the original idea or turn out to be something completely different. My compositions have been described as dramatic, psychological and symbolic and I’m frequently asked: “how did you do that?”  Compositionally and thematically I like to play off boundaries ‘separating’ traditional and modern art; fine art and design; realism and abstraction. I freely borrow expressive techniques from a variety of media and artistic styles to suggest or heighten visual experiences.

What it all comes down to is that I love making art and am inspired by the idea an art lover will ‘get’ what I’ve done and want to hang the picture in a place where they will see and enjoy it for years. Before my career in the arts, I worked as a business communications consultant, psychotherapist, and account executive in the financial services industry.
